In-depth knowledge of humanistic sciences is necessary, both at work and for further studies.
To enhance your knowledge as well as your research competence, the department offers master courses (one year and two years) in archaeology and Classical archaeology. The two-year master course has been created to conform to the European university systems, the so called Bologna process.
The one-year master course provides the opportunity to write a thesis of 30 hp and to follow 4 7.5 hp courses. Two courses can be studied in parallel. The two-year master includes a 45 hp thesis as well as 10 7.5 courses (longer 15 hp courses can be taken instead). Internships at e.g. a museum, a county council or an archaeological excavation company can be awarded 7.5 or 15 hp.
The courses selected are intended to help the thesis work, and should thus be related to the research subject. Half the reading courses should be within the chosen subject, the others can be selected from the list of courses presented by the faculty of history and philosophy every term. These courses are provided by other departments within our faculty. Within the subject of Classical archaeology we also accept the courses given by the Swedish Institutes in Athens and Rome as part of the master courses.
The new master courses will include regular contacts with teachers and supervisors from an early stage. Emphasis will be on helping you to develop your writing in the form of scientific texts, popular dissemination and oral presentation.
Our department is a creative environment with researchers in several areas. You are welcome to actively attend the Higher Seminars and in activities organised by the department and the student society Fjölnir.
Applications for the master courses are welcome for both the spring term and the autumn term. For further information, contact Director of studies Lars Karlsson and Study Guidance Councellor Eva-Lena Wahlberg. Lars.Karlsson@antiken.uu.se; Eva-Lena.Wahlberg@arkeologi.uu.se
The guidelines for master theses exist in Swedish only. Note that the instructions differ between the subjects of archaeology and classical archaeology.
