This textbook concerns the results of the contacts between Roman and Germanic cultures in the first part of the first milennium AD. The first two chapters are concerned with the ideological and political clashes and the profound impression made by the Roman culture on Germanic society. This is followed by chapters on the characteristics of Germanic society and trade. The fifth chapter is a detailed study of the settlement in Southern Scandinavia, while the sixth chapter discusses the contacts between the cultures as reflected by the Roman coins found in Scandinavia. The text ends with two chapters on Germanic society and its leadership. The notes at the end are intended as help for students.
